Dr. Steven Hackett is a Professor of Economics at Humboldt State University. Through his association with HSU’s Energy, Environment, and Society graduate program, Environmental Science undergraduate program, Schatz Energy Research Center, and Humboldt Energy Independence Fund, Dr. Hackett works with an interdisciplinary group of faculty, staff, and students on energy projects linked to reducing anthropogenic greenhouse-gas emissions. He will lead the economic portion of the RESCO project (see front page for more information about RESCO), which includes the development and application of economic impact assessment models to the energy sector of our regional economy and qualitative analyses of the economic development potential resulting from creating a renewable energy cluster in Humboldt County.

In his 20-year career Dr. Hackett has authored or co-authored more than 30 scholarly refereed journal articles, books, technical studies, and professional reports relating to economics and public policy. He has also contributed to a large number of environmental and other planning documents. He is author of the textbook Environmental and Natural Resources Economics: Theory, Policy and the Sustainable Society 3rd edition (New York: M.E. Sharpe, 2006), which has been adopted at colleges and universities in the US and abroad. Dr. Hackett has been active in regional economic development, and served as founding director of HSU’s Office for Economic and Community Development. In recent years Dr. Hackett has served as a senior consulting economist for various regional jurisdictions, and has received an American Planning Association award for economic development planning. In recognition of his research into regional economic issues, and what HSU President Rollin Richmond described as “the clarity and significance his work brings to global questions of environmental economics,” Hackett was selected as Humboldt State University’s Scholar of the Year for 2005.
